-Resilience- I really wish there were park rangers

-Resilience-
I really wish there were park rangers roaming the tidal basin during the Cherry Blossom Festival. People are trash. From climbing on trees, to ripping clusters of flowers from tree limbs, both children and adults needed to be told to STOP.
Rising tides are harming these trees enough. They don’t need to withstand abuse from humans, as well. During my visit, I walked by multiple limbs that were broken by someone thinking it was a good idea to hang off it.
Still, these trees continue to produce new branches, even on bare trunks like this one. I hope they made it through the crowds of people to bloom again next year.
I really enjoy the contrast in this photo. I hope you like it too.

-Petals-
With all the people buzzing around the tidal basin, wide shots with monuments in the background were a bit messy. Since I focus more on art, I had to find ways to get interesting photos that were as people-less as possible.
One way to do that, is focusing on the details. This becomes all about light, texture and depth. Normally, you’d want a macro lens for this type of shot. Since I’m traveling, I have a limited amount of space. Plus, my bag is heavy enough as is. I also don’t own a macro lens for my Nikon. So, there’s that. It’s okay though! My 70-200 can fake it! I just have to make sure I’m 3-4 feet away from my subject. Focusing is a little difficult, as well, but you do the best you can.
Eventually, I’d like to post a group of blossom photos. Ones that might work in a set of 3 on someone’s wall.
The goal is always to create images people would enjoy in their homes.

New locations take time to figure out. The tidal basin is huge. I walked for hours, trying to figure out my composition. Even if you find the composition you like, you need the right conditions. There are hundreds of people walking around the basin during peak bloom, even at sunrise. In calm conditions, a long exposure can help remove people from the scene, as long as they keep moving. If everything goes your way, your 10 minute exposure can look something like this. It just takes time.

I can go on and on about stuff I saw from humans that infuriated me during my trip to photograph cherry blossoms in DC.
This issue is caused by humans, but not intentionally. If you don’t believe in global warming, that’s fine. A good buddy of mine would just remind me that, “some people choose to be wrong…”
Anyway… Sea levels have risen in recent years, and that is affecting these trees in the DC tidal basin area. High tide is regularly cresting over the old sea wall that surrounds the basin and soaks tree roots with salt water. Trees are slowly dying, and it will be interesting to see what will be done in the future to try to save as many of these mature trees as possible.
In between the mud and salty roots, you have periodic puddles. The puddles can be annoying, especially when you’re not watching your steps. In the right light, however, you can use these puddles to your photographic advantage. These reflections become even more interesting as the cherry blossom petals begin to fall.
This photo won’t get a ton of likes, but it’s one of my favorites from the trip. Thanks for getting this far. Tell me what you think!

If you didn’t see my #igstories 👀, Sunday was a 💩show. People on top of people trying to tiptoe through the ever present puddles of mud. Baby strollers and dog walkers on a 4 foot wide peace of sea wall. At least 100 Instagram lives pointed at nothing in particular. Kids placed in trees while their parents pick off flower bunches for the children to hold in photos. That’s not allowed, btw…
With all the madness, this was still one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in person. I really had to stop to take it in while cranking up the volume of my AirPods.
